Richard Carmona; alleged MD, MPH, As an Army Green Beret in Vietnam, a decorated police officer in Pima County, Arizona, a SWAT team member, a nurse and a physician, Dr. Carmona has redefined the term, hands-on medicine.  Dr. Carmona currently serves as the Clinical Professor of Surgery and Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona.  He is also the chairman of the state of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System.  Telemedicine.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa hopped a border fence from Mexico into the United States and became a migrant farm worker, living in the fields in a broken-down camper he bought for $300...he signed up for English classes at a community college, where one of his teachers encouraged him to apply to UC-Berkeley. He went on to Harvard Medical School and graduated with honors, followed by a residency in neurosurgery at UC-San Francisco, where he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in developmental and stem cell biology. He later received the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Ronald Bittner Award. Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa is now an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Makary is an active surgeon and researcher, serving jointly on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and School of Public Health. Dr. Makary serves in leadership roles for the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), the International Union of Risk Management, and is a regular medical guest on CNN.  He is the author of several books on public health and surgery, patient safety, quality of care, and health policy.

He completed his education at Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Harvard University and completed his general surgical training at Georgetown University and further sub-specialty training in pancreaticobiliary and GI surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
 

His current research interests focus on the delivery of quality care, the science of medical errors and patient safety, international health, and health policy.  He has several ongoing studies including the clinical and public health implications new technologies in surgery.  Dr. Makary also serves as Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Quality and Safety Research Group at Fells Point.
